Mirror, mirror on the wall…..

…. who is the fairest of them all?

I remember hearing that in the class Walt Disney film and thought — ‘why would you ask a mirror that?’  Well, over the years I’ve come to realize the power that little piece of shiny glass holds over many of our lives.

But is there more to it than just what we look like?

Mirrors…..  I find them to be interesting things!  Old ones with ornate frames and yellowing. New ones that are crystal clear and beautiful. Magnifying ones that show everything – you never wanted to see on your face.  On and on the list goes…..

I recently had a conversation with dear friends. We were chatting about “life, love and other mysteries” and about the things we choose to see and believe about ourselves and why.

We talked.  We cried.  We laughed. We spoke of TRUTH. We spoke of the LIES we allow ourselves to believe and how it requires work to shift perspectives – it doesn’t “just happen”.

As we sat talking, I was struck by the thought that my friend (this specific one but so many others as well) are my life-mirrors!  She speaks (confirms) the things that I believe and know to be true about myself.  But she doesn’t just speak the “good stuff” — she also holds the TRUTH in front of my face!  Truth I know, but haven’t yet believed.  Truth, that I need to make changes in my life to progress!  Truth, that’s difficult to hear – because it means change and oftentimes that’s painful.  Truth!

I left their house that night soooo appreciative of friends who take the time to speak truth, challenge, encouragement into my world!

I love how God has brought really great “life-mirrors” into my world!  These people are the ones who help me see what I can’t, didn’t or don’t want to!  These are the mirrors I NEED in my life – whether it’s the good, the bad or the changeable… They help me see the TRUE reflection!
